Who gives a damn about sports right now in the wake of the Waukesha Christmas parade tragedy?

I don’t care about Wisconsin’s big win and Green Bay’s close loss and I’d like to know who out there still thinks the Milwaukee Bucks unified our bitterly divided city and surrounding suburbs with their championship.

When a person is mowing down our children and grandmothers at a Christmas parade, I want the whole world to stop and take stock of what is happening.

Who are the victims in the Waukesha Christmas parade tragedy? I want to know
We could be talking about Jonathan Taylor and Braelon Allen.

But all I want to know is the name of the SUV driver, his enablers, and the people who raised — or neglected — this monster. Add his name to the devils who have darkened our lives, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ed Gein, Walter Ellis and Steven Avery.

But more than that I want the names of those lost in another senseless tragedy so I can cry for them. I cannot stop thinking about that big bass drummer in the back of Waukesha South’s marching band. And the tuba player in the next row. I have to go to the streets of downtown Waukesha and place flowers and candles where the people were killed because I don’t know how else to tell the families, the parents and grandparents, siblings that I am so sorry.

I want the name of the little girl who seized and bled from her ears. Did she make it?

I want to thank the cop who tried to stop the driver of the maroon Ford Escape; thank him or her for firing at the car but also taking care to avoid bystanders. These days, I want to thank any cop who still runs to the criminals when we try to run away.

I want to thank the police who eventually captured the driver and I marvel at how they did not waste the guy on sight (because I would have wanted to).

When something like Waukesha happens, how can we talk about football and basketball right now?
Wisconsin, what are we doing? The rest of the world thinks Wisconsin is a dumpster fire, and after everyone has weighed in on Aaron Rodgers’ admission to refusing the COVID vaccine, and the Rittenhouse acquittal Friday, it is traumatic just to endure another gut-wrenching news cycle. Worse still, the toxic, ignorant inhumanity in the debates says a lot about us as a society.

But when something like Sunday night happens, how can we possibly talk about football and basketball right now?

When someone crushes our precious young and our beloved wise with the weight of a 3,500-pound weapon on wheels, we as a community are no longer spiraling out of control. We are walking in hell.

The stories of reckless driving and endangerment have been frequent and underplayed for a year now, and ask anyone in law enforcement in Milwaukee, it’s been a problem. The Christmas parade in Waukesha story is just more sickening than the rest.
