GRANVILLE, Ohio. (November 23, 2021) – After capturing North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season championships in women’s soccer and volleyball, Denison University is in the lead in the 2021-22 NCAC All-Sports Championship race. The Big Red posted top-five finishes in six of the seven fall championship sports.

In addition to garnering the maximum number of 10 points from both women’s soccer and volleyball, Denison collected 8.5 points from field hockey, eight points both men’s soccer and men’s cross country, 6.5 points from football and 4.0 points from women’s cross country.

In addition to leading the overall NCAC All-Sports standings with 55.0 total points, 6.5 points ahead of second-place DePauw University, Denison also leads the women’s standing with 32.5 points, five points in front of Kenyon College. In the men’s standings, DePauw leads with 26.0 points while Denison is second with 22.5 points.

The Denison volleyball team brought home the program’s first NCAC championship with a perfect record of 8-0 in conference play. Junior middle hitter Lucy Anderson (Third-Team All-American) and freshman outside hitter Daria Rodriguez (Honorable Mention All-American) became the first NCAA All-Americans in the history of the Denison volleyball program while Anderson was also the first Big Red volleyball player to be named NCAC Player of the Year. Rodriguez was the first to earn Region Freshmen of the Year and was the third in a row to win NCAC Newcomer of the Year. Additionally, Head Coach Carter Cassell was named NCAC Coach of the Year for the second time in a row.

Women’s soccer won its conference-best 11th NCAC championship with a 7-1 mark in the conference. Seniors Abby King and Katie Livingston were named the NCAC Midfielder and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, while Head Coach Gail Murphy was named the NCAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time.

After finishing in third place in the regular-season standings with a conference record of 6-2-1, the men’s soccer team rattled off a pair of 1-0 wins over No. 18 Ohio Wesleyan and No. 14 Kenyon College to win the NCAC Tournament Championship for the third time in program history. The Big Red then made their 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, but unfortunately came up short by a score of 1-0 in the first round against Covenant College. Senior goalkeeper Dylan Brown was named NCAC Tournament MVP and was joined on the all-conference first-team by junior midfielder Lorenz Hoover.

Field hockey tied for second place in the regular-season standings with a record of 6-2 in the conference. The Big Red advanced to their fourth straight NCAC Tournament Championship game before coming up short by a score of 2-1 in overtime against Ohio Wesleyan University. Sophomore defender Cary Mauck was the lone Big Red selection to the all-conference first-team, and was also named second-team all-region

Football finished its season 6-3 in the conference, which was tied for fourth place, and had 14 all-conference players, led by first-teamers Trey Fabrocini, Trey Dawkins, Kevin Stone, Jeff Moore, Ryan Hallinan, and Cory Swartzmiller.

Men’s cross country placed third in the NCAC while senior Kenan Ginell won the NCAC Individual Championship, was named NCAC Runner of the Year, made the All-Region team, and became the first Big Red men’s cross country runner to compete at the NCAA Championship since 2011, where he ran a new personal record and finished 93rd in all of NCAA Division III. Women’s cross country, meanwhile, placed seventh in the NCAC as senior Emily Willson earned both first-team all-conference and all-region honors.

The All-Sports champion receives the Dennis M. Collins All-Sports Trophy, given annually to the school that performances the best across the NCAC’s 23 sports. Denison has won this trophy a record 17 times and ranks first in the conference in terms of total conference championships at 159.
